DESCRIPTION

This unit provides a comprehensive account of the biology of birds and mammals that inhabit the Southern Ocean (loosely defined here as waters from Southern Australia to Antarctica), and the role that they play in the marine ecosystem. Topics covered in the unit include taxonomy, physiology, ecology, conservation and management, with an emphasis on integrating these issues within a broader ecological framework. The unit is an intensive 14 day course consisting of 24 hours of lectures and a 5 day field component.

WEIGHT: 12.5%

ASSESSMENT:

Essay (1500 words) 30%; ethics application 20%; major practical report 35%; oral presentation 15%.

TEACHING PATTERN: 15 days intensive, with 24 lectures and a 5 day field course to Bruny Island in week 2 (10-14 Feb).
