This unit provides you with an opportunity to examine the midwife's responsibility to provide safe care during complex labour, birth and the postpartum period. The unit builds upon CNA689 in that it considers at-risk and complicated situations that may endanger the health of either the woman and/or her foetus/neonate. Studies will include initiating emergencycare and assisting in the stabilising of a sick woman and/or her neonate as well as examining related social issues. Emphasis is on working with women holistically in complex situations and achieving appropriate referral to and collaboration skills with other members of the health care team to enhance the outcomes for mother and family.
