DESCRIPTION

This unit aims to extend registered nurses' understanding of transfusion of fresh and fractionated blood products. The transfusion process from sample collection through the basics of blood bank testing and cross-matching, and into transfusion administration will be covered, including valid consent and risk/benefits. The NHMRC clinical indications for transfusion of fresh blood products - red cells; plasma and platelets - will be discussed. Types of venous access and their management will be reviewed. Students will build on their knowledge throughout the unit.

WEIGHT: 12.5%

ASSESSMENT: Essay 40% (2000-2500 words); Case Study 40%; Quiz 20%
