DESCRIPTION

This unit will introduce students to the experiences of nurses in past violent conflicts. The unit is divided into two modules. Module 1 explores the war experiences of nurses in the 19th and early 20th centuries, including the Crimean, American Civil, Boer and First World Wars. Module 2 focuses on Australian nurses serving in the Second World War, Korean and Vietnam Wars. Students will work with primary historical sources such as diaries, letters, oral interviews and case files. The unit will make explicit the connections between military and nursing cultures during the 20th century.

WEIGHT: 12.5%

ASSESSMENT: Two written assignments totalling 4500 words
