Examines artistic responses to Augustus' transformation of the Roman state, concentrating on three major writers (Horace, Propertius and Ovid) and on the visual arts. Particular attention will be paid to the emperor's promotion of his ideological program (including his moral and religious reforms) through the medium of architecture and sculpture and to the poets' treatments of ideological issues.
