The unit aims to give students an introduction to the major artistic movements from the earliest periods of Greek art to the art of the Roman Empire. It will equip students to analyse the relation of monuments to social and historical events and to read material culture as an index of self-perception and representation, while introducing students to the major buildings and monumental structures of the classical world, with particular reference the artistic and architectural forms. Attention will also be paid to the ways in which the ancients themselves viewed their art and architecture.
