DESCRIPTION
Analyses the archaeological material of central Roman Italy. The chief theme of the course is the evolution of urbanised culture through the extant archaeological evidence in the urban centres of Rome, Pompeii, Ostia and their suburban hinterlands. The impact of the Romans was extreme, but this cultural force also changed and evolved, which explains the necessity to incorporate an analysis of the changes in Roman needs and technologies over time. The most dramatic change occurred during the 2nd Century BC, which saw a marked change in the urban climate and greatly affected the types of archaeological evidence that remain.
