Examines the political, social, economic and environmental history of Tasmania in the long nineteenth century. Themes include the nature of the convict system, relations with Aborigines, the anti-transportation movement and its legacy, the achievement of self-government, the role of women, poverty and economic depressions, mining, the rise of labour, Federation and World War I.
