DESCRIPTION
The unit will provide an introduction to historical archaeology. It will focus on the treatment and experience of convict labour in Van Diemen's Land and will examine ways in which archaeological techniques can aid our understanding of the past. Students will be taught through a combination of lectures and fieldwork including one week of site work supervised by the Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority. Places will be limited to a maximum of 30 students.

TEACHING PATTERN: 8 x 2 hour classes plus 1 week participation in a fieldwork and excavation program.
