Provides an introduction to major developments and themes in European history from the end of the Napoleonic Empire to the beginning of World War 1. Students will become familiar with the inter-relationships between the major European nations (France, Germany, Austro-Hungary, Italy and Russia) during the 19th and early 20th centuries; with the major political, social and economic institutions; and with influential intellectual and political theories and theorists. The focus will be on the period of reaction and revolution, liberal-nationalism, socialism and Marxism, the Industrial Revolution and its consequences, the unification of Italy and Germany and the colonial, economic and political conflicts that led to World War.
