The unit considers the process of revolutionary change in Asia from the mid 19th to the late 20th century, showing the complex interplay of ancient and diverse traditions; colonialism and resistance; nation-building and the struggle for democracy in multi-ethnic and multi-religious states. The unit focuses on India and Indonesia, and pays special attention to the role of 'revolutionary' leaders like Gandhi and Sukarno.
Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.
