DESCRIPTION A political, social and economic study of Europe in the era of the Cold War, from the end of the Second World War to the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. Topics include: post-war reconstruction and the Marshall Plan; the emergence of the 'Iron Curtain' and the Sovietisation of Eastern Europe; popular culture, social developments and rising prosperity in the West; the nature and policies of the respective Western European and Eastern-Bloc governments; the formation of NATO and the Warsaw Pact; the role of espionage and subversion; popular dissent and governmental responses in the East and West (eg Hungary 1956, the Prague Spring, and Paris 1968); the issue of nuclear arms and their deployment; diplomacy within and between the Western and Eastern States; efforts at European Integration through such institutions as the European Community; the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe and the ending of the Cold War.
