Explores what it was like to live and work in Australia from the establishment of responsible government until the end of the First World War, from the assertion of independence from Britain until the assertion of national pride on the international stage. Within the framework of the making of a nation and of a distinctively Australian identity, the unit takes a thematic approach and examines broad political, social and cultural issues. The themes are illustrated by examples from all colonies, including Tasmania, as appropriate. The unit ends by asking the questions: What kind of nation was Australia in 1918? Was the war the key turning point or the last, if most important, stage in building the nation and a distinctive Australian identity? Was there, in fact, anything distinctive about Australians and the society they had created? Students develop a familiarity with primary documents as well as major histriographical debates.
