This unit focuses on the Renaissance and the Reformation which, together with the geographical discoveries and imperial expansion of this period, represent a major break between medieval and modern Europe. The unit examines the remarkable dynamism and creativity of Italian society and culture in the fifteenth century; the developments in Portugal and Spain that led to maritime expansion and the opening up of new worlds of trade, colonisation and imagination; and the break-up of Europe in the Reformation. There will be an emphasis on images as well as texts, on the painters, sculptors and architects of Renaissance Italy, on the communications revolution associated with printing, on representations of the new world, and on the iconoclasm of the Reformation.
