This unit will explore the development of settler societies in Australia and South Africa in the period 1642 to 1856. It will focus on the colonies of Van Diemen's Land, New South Wales and the Cape and will examine a number of themes including interactions with indigenous peoples, the use of slave and convict labour and the development of colonial authority and systems of government. The unit will encourage students to evaluate historical developments in all three societies and assess the impact that colonisation had on indigenous peoples, slaves, convicts, free migrants and the colonially born.
