The late 16th and early 17th centuries were an age of crisis in Europe. Population growth, price rises, taxation and war were creating social unrest and political division, while religious division and cultural ferment were undermining old certainties and values. The unit considers Imperial Spain, the French Wars of Religion, the Dutch Revolt, English Society and Culture under Elizabeth, the Witchcraze, the Thirty Years War and the Civil War in Britain, and focuses on changing social conditions and world views as well as power-politics.
