Examines patterns of change and continuity, and conflict and consensus in Australia from federation to the dismissal of Gough Whitlam. Topics include nation building to 1914; the first world war, progressivism in the 1920s; Australia and the world depression in the 1930s; the second world war and its implications for Australia; economic and social transformations of the late 1940s and 50s, especially the impact of Menzies, communism and migration; the impact of the Vietnam war; exploration of the 1960s protest movements involving women, Aborigines, and the Greens; the achievements of the Whitlam government; and an overview of major developments of the late twentieth century.
