Examines both international relations and broader governance approaches to understanding global environmental policy. It will focus upon the roles that nation-states, international organisations and non-governmental actors, play in global policy processes. The formation and operation of international regimes as major policy instruments for the management of the global environment will be discussed. The unit will also introduce aspects of the global ecology and global economy, and review links between trade and environment, debt and environment, and security and environment. Students will have the opportunity to research global environmental issues such as climate change (including the 'greenhouse' issue), oceans policy, polar regimes, wildlife and biodiversity conservation.
