DESCRIPTION This unit provides a comparative analysis of the politics of democratisation in Asia. It considers historical, cultural, social and political preconditions for democracy in the region and examines why democratisation processes in some countries have been completed successfully while in others they have stalled or not even begun. Case studies to be covered in the unit include, amongst others, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan, South Korea, and China. The 'transition to democracy' literature will constitute the theoretical framework for the discussion of political change in Asia in the context of global democratisation in the post-cold war era.
