Questions about the mind and its relationship to the body were put on the modern philosophical agenda by Rene Descartes, and have never left it. They are also at the heart of the emerging field of cognitive science, and related work in psychology, linguistics, and artificial intelligence. This unit provides an introduction to the contemporary philosophy of mind and to the philosophical underpinnings of the contemporary cognitive sciences. It explores major materialist and dualist theories of mind, the nature of consciousness, intentionality and concept structure, the rival computational, connectionist and evolutionary approaches to mind, and the nature and overall prospects of a science of the mind. Along the way, it also covers some of the highlights and recent developments in psychology, linguistics and related fields.
