DESCRIPTION
This unit follows on from HPA291/391 Introduction to Logic. It introduces a range of modal logics and some of their applications in understanding possibility and necessity, time, obligation, knowledge, and other interesting topics, and explores the philosophical issues they raise themselves about the nature of logic and reasoning. The unit provides a good grounding in the metaphysical assumptions, research projects and concerns that lie behind much contemporary analytic philosophy.

WEIGHT: 12.5%

ASSESSMENT: 2 x (approximately) 1,500 word assignments (20% each), 3-hr exam (60%).

TEACHING PATTERN: 2 hrs lectures weekly, 1-hr tutorial fortnightly (13 wks)
