This unit permits students to choose one of two strands. The first has a language emphasis and is designed for advanced students of Japanese and for native speakers of Japanese. Students will undertake structured reading (both Japanese and English sources) on a topic agreed upon by the student and a supervisor and approved by the head of discipline. The second permits students to undertake intensive study of an element of Japanese society using English only sources. In both strands students are expected to employ the skills and conceptual knowledge acquired in earlier units to investigate an appropriate issue or topic related to Japan.
