This unit explores major genres and themes of film in contemporary mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong and the Chinese diaspora. Genres and themes covered include realist, revolutionary, postsocialist, crosscultural and transnational identity, colonialist and postcolonialist and martial arts. In addition to providing a survey of the major film trends and directors, the unit provides political, social, cultural and economic backgrounds to the films shown. Competing issues in contemporary mainland China and the two other Chinese speaking regions will be explored. These include the tension between political control and artistic freedom, shifting values, transformation and change involving urbanisation and modernisation, Chinese nationalism and ethnic identity, colonialism and revolution, gender and sexuality, marginality and alienation, globalisation and sovereignty.

TEACHING PATTERN: 13 x 2hr seminars plus approximately 10 films viewed through semester.
