This unit examines the theoretical and political dimensions of volunteering (power relations, development discourses, colonial and postcolonial theory). It covers issues relating to working as a volunteer in Asia through case studies, examples, interactive seminars and presentations. Students will learn about the practical aspects of volunteering - cultural awareness and knowledge, cross cultural communication skills, dealing with culture shock, adapting to different workplace situations, rights and responsibilities of volunteers, negotiating, finding a project, how to make the volunteer experience successful etc.

ASSESSMENT:
Short assignments (1,000 words total) (20%) self-reflective journal x 1,000 words (20%), group project and presentation (20%), 2hr exam (40%). Please note: Students enrolled in HMA251 will address different essay questions to those set for HMA351
