This course will involve students participating in a highly structured role-play game that focuses on India on the Eve of its independence. We will begin by thinking about what empire is. We will briefly trace the establishment and scope of the British Empire and students will be asked to think about what it meant to be colonised. To do this we will play the Reacting to the Past game "Defining a Nation: India on the Eve of Independence, 1945", set at the Simila Conference. The game will be played over six weeks of the semester. In addition to researching a particular role, students will deliver oral presentations in-role and produce written work from the perspective of their role. Students should finish this course with a sense of the key challenges of decolonization in British colonies and some understanding of the meaning of the end of Empire.
WEIGHT: 12.5%
ASSESSMENT: 200 level and 300 level: Written assignments and class work totalling 2500 words (50%),discussionand participation on MyLO (20%), presentation (10%) 1000 word reflective essay (20%). Level 300 students will be required to answer a more complex reflective question.
