This unit aims to give students an insight into some of the important and contentious issues emerging in contemporary China. No previous study of China or Chinese language is required as the background and historical introduction necessary for making meaning of events, changes and trends in China now will be provided. Students will be introduced to a range of topics including population policies, governance issues, protests and social change, internet censorship and control, online cultures and practices, the question of 'youth' and the new generation gap.
WEIGHT: 12.5%
ASSESSMENT: 200 level and 300 level: Written assignments and class work totalling 3000 words (40%), seminar participation and presentation (20%), 2-hr exam (40%) Level 300 students will be required to answer more complex examination questions
TEACHING PATTERN:
2 hr workshop seminar each week (2hrs x 13weeks)
