This unit explores the emergence of modern Asia. It analyses the impact of European colonisation at the end of the 19th century and traces the economic, political and cultural changes brought by modernisation. European ideas about Asia, capitalism and socialism, nationalism, independence and separatist movements and struggles are all explored. Other topics such as the development of vibrant popular cultures and products (such as Japanese
anime, Chinese rock music, Indonesian
dangdut dance) and the impact of globalisation including tourism are covered.

ASSESSMENT:
Short written assignments totalling 1,000 words (30%), 1 x 1500 word research essay (30%), 2 hour examination (40%).
