DESCRIPTION
Human reproduction is not simply a biological process; it also has symbolic, political, philosophical, and ideological meanings. In this unit, we will examine the contested meanings of reproduction, including how individuals plan for and experience reproduction, how social meanings influence biological understandings of reproduction, and social understandings of who should and should not reproduce (and under what circumstances). In other words, we will think about how culture and social structures shape the reproductive realm. This unit will also consider social policy issues related to reproduction in Australia and abroad. Drawing from classic and contemporary sociological and feminist scholarship, films, images, and discussions, we will explore issues ranging from menstruation and pregnancy to childbirth, breastfeeding and parenthood.

ASSESSMENT:
Intermediate level: 3 x 500 word reflective essays (40%), 3000 word research essay (50%) Tutorial participation (10%)
Advanced Level: 3 x 500 word reflective essays (40%), 3500 word research essay (50%) Tutorial participation (10%)

25% at Introductory level in Sociology OR 25% at introductory level in Gender Studies
