The unit provides an introduction to social research as practiced in the social sciences, particularly sociology. Students will be introduced to research methods that enable the collection and analysis of data relating to a range of social phenomena. They will consider how social data are patterned and examine social data using a variety of research methods.
WEIGHT: 12.5%
ASSESSMENT:
200 Level: 2 tests, equivalent to 1,000 words (30%), 2,000 word assignment (30%), 2 hr exam (40%) 300 Level: 2 tests, equivalent to 1,000 words (30%), 2,500 word assignment (30%), 2 hr exam (40%)
TEACHING PATTERN:
Internal: (Hobart) 2 lectures and 1 hour lab/tutorial weekly; (Launceston) 2 hour lecture and 1 hour lab/tutorial weekly Distance: Weekly online lectures and 2 non-compulsory study schools

BA/BSocSc: 25% at level 100 in Sociology or equiv (S3T: 25% from Schedule B); BTourism: normally 75% at level 100

A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus.
