This unit will develop the student's ability to analyse the production and consumption of 'cult media' content and information across multiple platforms and spaces. Three areas will be addressed: 'theory' establishes the current approaches explaining cross-platform entertainment and virtual/real space hybridity, 'world building' explores cult media franchises that have created rich worlds across virtual and real spaces, and 'audiences' focuses on the participation of individuals and communities within these cult media spaces. This unit will expand the media studies tool kit introduced in earlier units by advancing theories such as textual analysis through transmedia navigation, political economy through the public sphere, and audience analysis through fan studies. These approaches will give students the tools they need to negotiate the boundaries and opportunities that comprise today's cult media flows.
