Conflicts - whether war, crime, politics or sport - are a central feature of media. From global crises to local competitions, news and other media use conflict to frame the stories they tell about the world and its social, cultural and physical conditions. This unit examines the professional practices and textual and contextual outcomes of media's relationship with conflict, from historical and contemporary perspectives. It has two main objectives: to introduce students to the key theoretical debates and concepts surrounding media and conflict, and to improve students' own journalism practice in the reporting of conflict.

ASSESSMENT: Assessment: 5500 words internal assessment, including essay (1500 words) (30%), analysis of media coverage of conflict (1500 words) (30%) and 2500 words or equivalent major journalistic assignment (story and exegesis) (40%).
TEACHING PATTERN: 5 contact hours fortnightly.
