SPECIAL NOTE: 

Entry to the unit is competitive, and is subject to approval by the Unit Coordinator. Availability of placements varies from year to year. The placement process can take some weeks and commences in advance of the commencement of semester. Students are therefore encouraged to provisionally enrol in the unit as early as possible. Applicants will be notified if their enrolment has been approved in the week before commencement of semester.

About Census Dates

DESCRIPTION
Students are assigned to a placement in the media and communications industry either in a government, private or not-for-profit organisation approved by the University. Students learn the practical skills necessary for the media and communications practitioner. Placement gives students the opportunity to better understand how journalistic and media theory operates in practice within an industry context. Students will, where opportunity allows, contribute to the production, publication and presentationof media and communications content (e.g. news stories, media releases, newsletters) while working under the supervision of a qualified professional.

WEIGHT: 12.5%

ASSESSMENT: Professional practice skills acquired during placement (awarded in consultation with placement provider), work portfolio, and 1,500-word reflective analysis of professional practice experience (60%), 1,500-word essay (25%), oral presentation on placement (15%)

TEACHING PATTERN: Ten days placement per student; plus 16 hours in seminar attendance across the semester.

REQUISITE INFO
Prereq 25% at level 100 in Journalism, Media and Communications plus 25% level 200/300 Journalism, Media and Communications units. A credit average in Journalism, Media and Communications units is desirable.
