This unit provides students with an introduction to the skills required to work as a journalist in print, broadcast and online. It also introduces students to the techniques of news analysis. Students build their understanding of news by examining the professional practices of journalists and the broader political, social, economic and organisational dynamics impacting on news production; by drawing on a range of theories and methods commonly used in media research; and through producing news themselves. At the end of the unit, students should have developed an in-depth understanding of the processes and practices affecting news production and be able to research and write news stories.

ASSESSMENT:
One 3000 words internal assignment comprising news stories and critical analysis. Two hour examination.
