DESCRIPTION

This unit introduces students to the interdisciplinary field of media studies. It explores a broad range of media examples from the perspectives of text, industry and audience. Topics may include: advertising, celebrity, and fan cultures. These topics form the basis of case studies that encourage students to think critically about the media industries, the social contexts surrounding the production and consumption of media products, and their own social and cultural subject position in relation to these products.

WEIGHT: 12.5%

ASSESSMENT: Internal assignments totalling 2,500 words (60%), two-hour examination (40%)

TEACHING PATTERN: Three contact hours weekly (13 weeks)
