Beginning with the division of Germany after World War II, the unit traces the divergence of the two cultures through the study of representative works of literature. It continues with the main developments that distinguished East and West German society and then traces German literature up to unification. Students gain an enriched appreciation of modern German literature, including an historical understanding of the interrelationships between East and West German culture.

ASSESSMENT: Two 1,500-word essays (40%), two-hour written examination (60%)
