Provides a study of contemporary fiction from cultures that have been shaped by the experience of British colonialism and its aftermath. The unit focuses on texts from South Africa and Australia, and emphasises significant and related areas such as the legacy of colonialism; 'writing back' to the Empire; postcolonial theory; the politics of speaking positions; reconciliation; gender and colonialism; and the politics of whiteness.
