This unit aims to provide students with the skills to develop theoretically informed arguments in response to films. Studying Film is organised around three modules: 'The Shot' introduces students to key aspects of film form and style; 'The Narrative' explores narratological questions of film structure and authorship; 'The Context' focuses on a major movement or genre in the history of film. Students will explore key approaches and methodologies for analysing films, develop an appreciation of the history of filmmaking, and enhance their ability to read films contextually.

ASSESSMENT: 500 word film review (10%); 1,500 word shot-by-shot analysis (30%); 3,000 word research essay (60%)
