DESCRIPTION Critics argued that Robert Lowell's Life Studies set a precedent for confessional poetry in the middle of the twentieth-century. The unit analyses the nature of this precedent by investigating links with the lyric, Romanticism, a revised notion of Modernist impersonality, and Beat poetry. It documents the confessional impulse inspired by Lowell, chiefly through a study of the work of Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes, and examines the history of confessional literature from Augustine to Ben Elton.
