DESCRIPTION

Explores the ways in which power works to shape gender by examining the gendered nature of the institutions and experience of education, government, work, violence, law and other areas of life using a range of disciplinary perspectives. The unit stresses the ways in which we negotiate and actively produce various understandings of gender. Attention is paid to contemporary gender issues in Australia and their global context, with a particular focus on the ways gender has changed over time in different contexts.

WEIGHT: 12.5%

ASSESSMENT: 2-hr exam (40%), 1,000-word short essay (15%), 1,500-word long essay (35%), tutorial participation (10%)

TEACHING PATTERN: 2x1-hr lectures, 1-hr tutorial weekly (13 wks)
