This unit introduces a range of theoretical and critical approaches to First Nations cinema. Films will be contextualised within their own territorial history, with consideration given to their capacity to create transcultural experiences for a global audience. Central themes informing our analysis will include representation, nation, globalisation, identity, and belonging. Viewing content will include a range of feature films, short films, and documentaries from Australia, New Zealand, and North America. Examples that may be studied include Ten Canoes, Nice Coloured Girls, Bran Nue Dae, Beneath Clouds, Boy, Once Were Warriors, Whale Rider, The Long Walk: Tears of the Navajo, Reel Injun, Pete & Cleo, and Turquoise Rose.
ASSESSMENT: HAB218: 2 x 750 word critical film reviews (30%); 2,000 word essay (30%); 2 hour exam (40%). HAB318: 2 x 750 word critical film reviews (30%); 2,500 word essay (30%); 2 hour exam (40%).
