This Unit focuses on Indigenous warfare across the Australian continent and in comparative contexts such as New Zealand. Its initial emphasis is on Indigenous warfare prior to colonial contact. The complexities of frontier warfare will then be considered, with attention being given to instances of collaboration between colonists and Indigenous peoples as well as to episodes of conflict. Some attention will also be paid to Indigenous involvement in World War I and World War II, and Indigenous interpretations of these experiences, and contemporary gang warfare.
