DESCRIPTION
Statistics consistently show that Aboriginal mortality rates far exceed those of setter-Australians, indeed some 50% of Aboriginal Australians die before they reach the age of 50. This unit explores the reasons for this situation, taking a social determinants approach that interrogates the socio-economic, cultural and political factors that impact on Aborigines' health status. The unit examines pre-contact health in Australia and comparable settler contexts, and considers the effectiveness of contemporary policies, programs and practices that are intended to improve Aboriginal health outcomes.
25% at level 100 in Aboriginal Studies major or cognate if completing the major. 25% at level 100 in any discipline in any faculty if taking as an elective.
