As students in art and/or design, it is important to be able to locate your work in the broader context of debates about the role and significance of the visual arts. Of particular relevance to contemporary practice has been the challenge to the ideals of art and design which underlay the modernist project in the first half of the 20th century. This led to a reconsideration of the relation of art and design practice to mass culture, a questioning of the role of institutions such as the museum and the art market and a broadening of the conception of what constitutes art.
In this core intermediate level unit you will be introduced to the key issues arising from the postmodernist challenge to modernism. You will also examine the impact of broader social and political movements such as feminism and post-colonialism on the visual arts.
Through a series of illustrated weekly lectures, you will be introduced to the main theorists, artists and designers who have addressed these issues. Weekly tutorial discussions and presentations will focus on specific readings on these subjects and examine the work of relevant practitioners.
Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified).
