This unit offers an in depth investigation of word-based communication and its relationship to language. It embraces both traditional craft issues and new technologies towards the practical application of typography across a range of print-based platforms. The unit engages with the intelligent development of visible language through an experimental approach to the study of typography. Students will learn the language of form, composition, balance, structure and hierarchy as applied to the form and function of the printed letterform. Emphasis is placed upon the acquisition of skills, conceptual development and knowledge.

ASSESSMENT:
Poster (20%), Quiz (5%), Project (75%)
TEACHING PATTERN: 3 hrs tutorial/practical demonstration weekly, plus an expectation of at least an additional 3 hrs independent practical work weekly (13 weeks)
