Predicated on the notion that intermediality lies at the intersection of music, art and theatre, this unit provides a comprehensive survey of the philosophies and polemical debates surrounding intermediality and its relevance to current and emerging practices in live music performance, theatre, television, cinema, dance and puppet theatre as examples. As a framework, the course reviews the evolution of these types of performance outcomes through an examination of the key practitioners, their theoretical and artistic perspectives and individual uses of technology. With comparison to the technology of Greek drama (
deus ex machina) through Wagner's concept of
Gesamtkunstwerk, the pioneer work of major proponents in multimedia in the 20th and 21st Centuries is examined in relation to body (virtual and real), space (physical and liminal) and time. Artists considered include Robert Lepage, Merce Cunningham, Laurie Anderson, Blast Theory, Stelarc and Eduardo Kac. Approaches to intemediality including virtual reality, robotics and telematics, Webcams and online communities will also be discussed.
