This unit explores the skills required for the modern practice of small group arranging for contemporary jazz ensembles. The unit provides students with an extended understanding of instrument ranges and timbres associated with particular instrument blending. Implementation of correct nomenclature for chart and score writing is essential to the conveyance of the arranger's concept. Analysis of melody in relation to chord and appropriate choice of harmonization, analysis of form and variations that are associated with various styles will be a vital facet in relation to completing major projects. This unit utilises and develops musicianship and aural skills necessary for successful arranging for small contemporary ensemble.

ASSESSMENT:
Two Major Arranging Projects: 70% (mid semester @ 30%, end semester @ 40%)
Score Analysis: 30% (end of semester project, to be submitted with end of semester arranging project)
