DESCRIPTION

This unit builds upon the skills and understanding gained in Music Materials 1A. The purpose of the unit is to develop musicianship through the study of jazz and contemporary music theory, notation, and aural skills. Students will engage in a variety of activities aimed at connecting the theoretical and practical aspects of music making whilst developing deeper abilities in music literacy, harmonic analysis, rhythm, and improvisational/compositional techniques integral to jazz and contemporary music practice.

WEIGHT: 12.5%

ASSESSMENT:

Theory: 50% (2 x assignments, 1 x exam)

Aural: 50% (3 x workshop tests, 1 x exam)

TEACHING PATTERN: 2 X 90 minute lecture/workshops weekly
