Music performance requires a significant amount of time spent in regular practice in both solo and group settings. Ensemble work is an important and complementary activity to develop professional performance skill: all students in the performance major will be assigned to Conservatorium ensembles and are required to attend all rehearsals for concert performances.
Students are expected to attend masterclasses of visiting artists specific to their field of study (ie classical or contemporary).

The performance major is devoted to developing the student's awareness of how, why and what is required for musical expression at the professional level. In this first unit the primary focus is on effective practice: in practice the performer must analyse, experiment, reflect and revise. This unit will start with an analysis by the teacher of the student's abilities after which an individual course of study will be devised to improve playing craft and skill.
Students may undertake this study in one of the following classical or contemporary specialisations: flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, euphonium, trombone, tuba, percussion, drums, harp, piano, organ, keyboards, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, violin, viola, cello, double bass, voice

ASSESSMENT:
End of semester assessment: 50%, 20 minutes. The material presented will reflect the work undertaken in the one-to-one lesson, eg. Technical work, studies, recital repertoire, student journal

Weekly activities: 50%, assessment of the student's weekly preparation and participation in all unit activities, classes and rehearsals eg. concert/repertoire diary, ensemble commitment, excerpts jury

TEACHING PATTERN:
Minimum of 3 hours contact weekly comprising the following activities: 1 hr Individual lesson, 1-2 x 90 minute performance classes or group tutorial, 2-3 hr ensemble activity/rehearsal.
