Introduction

The Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice is 26-week full-time professional and practical training course conducted by the Centre for Legal Studies in Hobart. The course runs from February to July each year. It prepares law graduates for the conduct of legal practice. It is an approved course of practical legal training in the duties of a legal practitioner, for the purposes of the Legal Profession Act 2007 Section 25.

Admission & Prerequisites

Applicants need to have successfully completed a degree of Bachelor of Laws or a combined degree course including the Bachelor of Laws at the University of Tasmania or any other approved Australian university. Applicants need to have passed the requirements of the subjects prescribed by the Board of Legal Education pursuant to Section 25 of the Legal Profession Act 2007 (Tas). [see LEGAL PROFESSION (BOARD OF LEGAL EDUCATION) RULES 2010 (S.R. 2010, NO. 55) ]

Course Objectives

To ensure that aspiring practitioners have the essential knowledge, values, attitude and skills to practice law competently.

Career Outcomes

Successful completion of the course is normal prerequisite for admission as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Tasmania.

Fees
All domestic places in the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice are Commonwealth Supported Places and students are eligible for HECS-HELP.
