Introduction
This on-campus, 3-year full-time (maximum 7 years) course is offered at the Hobart and Launceston (Year 1 only) campuses. Anyone wishing to commence the course at the Burnie campus should contact the Degree Co-ordinator, Ms Ying Chen (03) 6226 6213 to discuss.
Admission & Prerequisites
Possession of the University's basic admission requirements. TCE Information Systems and Computer Science or their equivalent are useful background, but are not prerequisites for admission to the degree.
Students who have completed a Diploma of Business in a business discipline or a Diploma of Information Technology from a Tasmanian Institute of TAFE, and have been admitted to the course, may receive credit for up to eight (8) units towards the degree. Students completing an Advanced Diploma in a related discipline may receive credit for up to ten units towards the degree. Depending on the course of study and the majors chosen, students may not be able to use all of the credit that has been granted, for example, credit for unspecified electives. The status of individual units is determined at the time of offer.
Applicants wishing to obtain credit for study already undertaken within another faculty, or an Australian or overseas tertiary institution should consult the Admission Guide for information on procedure.
In the case of international students, credit for previous study will be determined on application. English language skills will also need to be verified. International students must provide an IELTS score with an overall Band of 6 and no band less than 5.5; or a TOEFL score of 550 with a Test of Written English score of no less than 4.5. The test must not be more than 24 months old.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, a graduate of the Bachelor of Information Systems should be able to enhance the performance of organisations, including business, government and community groups, by:
1. applying business, project management and technical ICT knowledge to:
interpret and critically analyse organizational needs in different business contexts
identify, frame and structure organisational problems
use systems analysis techniques and tools to analyse and model business processes & information requirements
contribute to the formulation of an organisational information systems strategy
2. designing, implementing and evaluating ICT-enabled solutions by:
researching and developing alternative strategies considering their associated benefits, risks, limitations and opportunities taking account of societal, health, safety, legal, and cultural issues
sourcing chosen solutions and managing change associated with the implementation
reviewing and assessing the effectiveness of implemented solutions
3. acting professionally within local and global contexts by:
communicating in different modes to diverse audiences including clients, peers, and other professionals
adhering to professional and ethical codes of conduct
working independently and collaborating in diverse teams to achieve goals
Career Outcomes
Graduates of the Bachelor of Information Systems can expect to find employment as anICT business analyst, computer systems auditor, information architect, information strategy developer, database designer, information security analyst, project manager, business process analyst, systems analyst, chief information officer, logistics manager, ICT manager, information manager, ICT consultant.

Miscellaneous Information
Combined degree with Law
Students enrolled for the BIS may apply at the end of Year 1 to enter combined studies with the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree. The combined degree takes five years full time. Quotas apply. The first year of the combined degree is available at Launceston. Students must complete the combined degree at the Hobart campus. Students with a TE score of 92 or above may apply for direct admission to the BIS-LLB degree (see Section Faculty of Law section of the Handbook).
The unit LAW121 Introduction to Law and LAW122 Legal Systems are compulsory in Year 1 for those intending to transfer to the combined degree. The first year law units are also offered in Launceston. Students must transfer to Hobart to complete the degree.
